With the commencement of the Karthigai Deepam festival at Tamil Nadu’s revered Annamalaiyar Temple in Tiruvannamalai, a 10-day celebration marking a significant cultural and spiritual event has begun.
his annual festival is a cornerstone of Tamil Nadu’s rich cultural tapestry, drawing millions of devotees nationwide to partake in the festivities. The grandeur of the festival is inaugurated with the hoisting of a flag on a majestic 64-foot-tall golden flagpole, an event that attracts thousands to the vicinity of the Annamalaiyar shrine.
The festival is synonymous with the veneration of Lord Shiva, epitomized by the illuminating Maha Deepam – a massive cauldron filled to the brim with ghee, set ablaze atop Arunachala Hill. This act of lighting, occurring on December 13, symbolizes Lord Shiva’s manifestation as an infinite pillar of fire, a narrative rooted deeply in Hindu mythology addressing the supremacy debate between Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma. The Maha Deepam, towering five feet high and weighing 250 kilograms, is lit with a kilometer-long cotton wick, burning continuously for eleven days, serving as a beacon of divine energy and truth visible for miles around.
